Contact Your Senators NOW - Missouri COVID-19 Immunity Bill

The bill provides immunity for anything less than intentional conduct on the part of a business for the spread of the disease. Aside from creating an impossible legal standard, the bill would shield businesses from liability for claims that fall out of workers’ compensation. In other words, a worker’s family member who is injured or killed through the worker’s workplace infection is left without a legal remedy.

At the December 2020 Senate hearing, those testifying in favor of the bill – hospitals and insurance companies – clearly seek to discourage anyone from filing suit, much less prevailing at trial. The danger in permitting this legislation to move forward is that it opens the door for other, equally unconstitutional measures to be considered post COVID-19 – truly a “camel’s nose” situation.

The Republican controlled Missouri Legislature, led by their corporate donors, have been chipping away at our right to seek redress through the courts for decades. This legislation represents a test case for everything those special interests hold dear. We must not permit our fundamental rights be eroded, even by small, seemingly innocuous measures, or we will find ourselves, one day without them.
